Lyrics:

The ghosts are here, needing to be fed
With answers to the questions of the restless dead
There are dark thoughts circling in my head
I wish I’d listened to everything they said

The ghosts are here, they’re not laid to rest
They cluster round my bed at night and put me to the test
In some secret corner I knew I’d rue the day
I didn’t make more effort, I went my own way

The ghosts are here with their gift of guilt
My failures sewn together to make a shabby quilt
They say they forgive me – that I should forget
But I miss them still and I’ll always feel regret

The ghosts are here, needing to be fed
With answers to the questions of the restless dead
There are dark thoughts circling in my head
I wish I’d listened to everything they said

The ghosts are here, they’re not laid to rest
The ghosts are here, with their gift of guilt
The ghosts are here, the ghosts of December

Close To Mike

Moira on what inspired her to write this song:
„Driving home from Savannah, we passed a place called Gibson’s Creek where there was a view of an old, broken-down house of grey wood at the end of a jetty which extended into a wide expanse of smooth river. It made a beautiful picture – very North American to my mind – and it resulted in this song. Hope you like it.“

A song about the momentariness of love, the shame of saying „it is over“ and the wish of not getting hurt again.

The musical arrangement tries to capture the beautiful landscape inspired Moira to this song but also tries to reflect the flickering energy between both of the characters. At the end the Sax enters the scenery softens down and let go.

Close To MikeCLOSE TO MIKE
You’re back – tell me all about where you’ve been
Paint me some pictures in words of every exotic scene
Tell me some stories – it gets kinda samey here on the Creek
And I need the buzz of hearing you speak

We could rock on the back porch, watch the sun slip down
Those dark green waters where our aspirations drowned
When this old Creek’s wrapped in dusk’s embrace
It’s really almost pretty and then you can’t look in my face

Oh it’s so good to see you, say you’ll stay
Let’s lie cool and quiet – think up games to play
In the dawn you’ll leave me, disappear without a trace
But for now draw me close and I promise I won’t look in your face

Small Back Room

Where are you going to hide yourself? Do you have a room where you are left alone? Where you can let go your thoughts and dream of a different life? Where you can hide from reality?

Moira Waugh’s emotionally compelling lyrics lure the listener into this story of love and of loss. She tells a story about one woman hiding herself in a room only existing in mind where she can hide to let memories and wishes become reality again.

Moira’s special talent is to put a very decent attitude in every single note sung. You can taste the current bitterness, rage, irony but also let you recognize the the fun there was in the past.

Siobhan put this into a piano ballad setup. Only a beatleasque flute and the bass guitar picking up the mood of the lyrics and fastens and lowers the percieved speed of the track. Literally you can imagine the „winds wet sea“ with the Strings appearing.
Moira’s warm mellow singing is accompanied by the 110 BPM rhythm through all the various temptations.

Kara Square supports with fantastic soft and deep background vocals which perfectly underpins the mixed emotions the imaginary person is experiencing.

Lyrics:

Small Back Room

There’s a small back room where I sometimes go
It has no existence in space or time
It’s where I hide when I’m feeling low
The only place where you are mine

Just this one time away from our worlds, that was always the deal
Two days from life by a windswept sea was all we could ever steal

In that small back room I can hold you once more
The single place I want to be
I can leave my pain outside the door
In here you belong to me

We kept saying how lucky we’d met, some people never know bliss
But even then I knew my heart would die, I’d never get over this

There’s a small back room where I sometimes go
It has no existence in space or time
It’s where I hide when I’m feeling low
The only place where you are mine
