The Selkie’s Daughter

The Selkie’s Daughter is a Christmas adventure story for children and their parents (and their parents‘ parents) that explores many parallels to the experience of human life through the eyes of a curious selkie.

A selkie is mythical creature inhabiting the sea as a seal, and then changing to human form on land. Selkies are similar to mermaids and swan maidens. While in water, the allure of human interaction is intoxicating for selkies. And while on land, they yearn for their freedom under the sea.

Through this magical dramatic tale about growing up, the listener will discover if “the grass is greener on the other side” for our selkie heroine. Will the forbidden thrill of adventure be worth the exchange of consequences? Will her journey cure her aching loneliness? Will she find her true home?

The evolution of the Audiobook:
A couple of years ago Moira Waugh composed a melody for a backtrack Dan-T has produced. Moira shared the accapella on ccMixter and so the story began.
I took the stem and built a piano theme. From that theme a complete orchestral setup grew. Once I had finished the 7+ Minute track I thought: „Oh that will never be played in any radio station.  Way to long“
The lyrics from Moira were so inspiring that a year after I finished the first version of the mix I started to write a story around the lyrics. Unfortunately my the range of my vocabulary is not too good. So I asked Rob Walker (who is publishing his poems on ccMixter as well) if he is willing to enhance the story and would be willing to do the narration. And the result of what he came back with is now available for your listening pleasure.

Blackbird Song

About this Song:

Moira: Dusk is my favourite time of day, when the world seems to pause while the blackbird sings his pure, crystalline notes and the sun relinquishes the sky to the moon and stars.

Siobhan: A pretty simple setup with piano, horns, strings and a flute representing the crystalline notes from the blackbird song. The musicbox at the end is like a nice lullaby. Sleep well.

Lyrics:

BLACKBIRD SONG

Blackbird, sing into the fading light
Here in the dusk, dividing day and night
Each note so pure and clear
As one by one the silent stars appear
Blackbird, don’t fly away too soon
But raise your voice to the falling sun
And the rising moon

Shadows stretch and the light grows old
Blackbird’s throat is lined with gold
Love and hope hold sway
While we’re under the gaze of the Milky Way
Oh Blackbird, don’t leave me too soon
But sing your song to the shy little stars
And the smiling moon

But sing that song to the shy little stars
And the smiling moon

Here They Come Again

About this Song:

Moira: People who know me well have frequently told me that I go over and over old grievances in my mind instead of just letting them go and looking ahead. So I thought I’d write a song about it!

Siobhan: Jazz, Easy Listening. I love the  James Bond Movie Themes – So I tried to setup one with Moira’s fantastic voice. The song is about a fight against these bad thought – James Bond enemies are also like unwanted ”family members”. Orchestra (Brass / Strings), Piano, Bass Guitar, Synthetic Drums.

Lyrics:

HERE THEY COME ROUND AGAIN

Here they come round again
Those tormenting thoughts of now and then
I’ve always tended to be this way
I inhabit the present
But I was made yesterday

Here they come round again
Those painful thoughts of now and then
They’re not my friends
More like family members
Causing regret whenever I rake over the embers

People always tell me
I’m an angry person inside
I keep an eternal flame burning
Wherever dark memory resides

I should bury the hatchet
Unsettle the score
But when I recall an injustice
I’m flexing my claws

Here they come round again
Those bitter thoughts of now and then
I’ve always been this way
I cling to the present
But I was made yesterday

It has been my experience
When stepping into the light
The next step might take you
To an endless night

Here they come round and round and round again
Those bitter thoughts of now and then

I cling to the present
But I was made long ago

Still Water

About this Song:

Moira: I love Celtic music and Siobhan’s setting here is just magical. This song is dedicated to my husband, Mark Bass.

Siobhan: The lyrics are all about love – opening oneself to another but getting not the same feelings back. This is setup as a hymn for broken hearts.

Lyrics:

STILL WATER

Clear as light on still water
I let him see how I feel
But his heart gives no quarter
He has walls made of steel

I laid down my cards
He’s seen how I play
He wants me for a while
But I’ll want him to stay

He’s anger and fire
I’m soft as a dove
His passion will burn me
Yet I’ll keep looking for love
